The artist, Ann Swallow moved to the Almaquin Highlands as a full time resident ten years ago and is now working full time as a glass artist creating original stained glass artwork. Ann has been working with glass for over 20 years.

She began in Niagara – when she took a course with her daughter – on a whim. Ann primarily uses the copper foil technique to create her pieces. The artwork is constructed of smaller pieces united to form a design.

It consists of wrapping cut sections of glass in a self-adhesive tape that is made out of thin copper foil. This technique requires a great deal of dexterity and is also very time-consuming. After the sections have been foiled, they are soldered together in order to form the picture.

“For me glass is the most mysterious and magical of materials. I love the way glass constantly changes with the light. No two pieces are ever the same and you can look at a piece and it will look different every time. I spend my time searching for new ways to use stained glass to make forms and colors; to paint with glass. Each piece I create is original and will not be duplicated. I enjoy working in ways that are unique —that’s what I love to do.”
